Escaping the coronavirus pandemic in a stunning location via one-euro renovation properties.
Renovation of deserted properties purchased for just one euro is old news, but the trend is growing fast as would-be expats disenchanted with the modern world are moving in. New communities veering towards creativity, green living, craftsmanship and re-establishment of supportive community living are now seeing the opportunities available as a way to reject today’s greed and chaos and build their own lifestyles.
Expats who’ve already taken the chance are now sharing the dream with those who’re disenchanted enough by modern life to create their own societies as well as breathing new life into abandoned villages in stunning natural settings all over Europe. It’s all about authenticity, and the pandemic is being seen as a wake-up call for those who’ve had enough of modern-day society. None of the homes or entire villages are of any interest to conventional property seekers, but expats looking for a new life are investing in abandoned properties in destinations such as Italy, Spain and France.
The deal is the same all over Europe, with properties costing as little as one euro plus the promise to renovate to a good standard within an average of three years. Costs of renovations vary from as little as £15,000 upwards, in regions where older but solid homes start at around £12,000. Italy is the most popular with, for example, Cammarata in Sicily actually giving away the houses as if they were a litter of unwanted puppies. Popular Cantiano lies in the north of the country and is offering two historic buildings in its centre. The Sicilian village of Gangi was voted ‘most beautiful in Italy’ six years ago, and has been selling its run-down properties since 2011.
Spain’s abandoned village marketplace is well worth investigating, as the trend is now to sell an entire hamlet, and opportunities are unlimited for those wanting to set up a colony of like-minded people. Amazingly, given its reputation as a haven for the fabulously wealthy, Switzerland’s Monte Sciaga village has nine one euro properties for sale. Peace and quiet is guaranteed, as the location is remote!
