An elderly expat woman who’d lived in

Dubai

for over 40 years has had her back rent paid by the city.

The 75–year old expat, now retired and with little or no income, had been living in Dubai for 43 years, but was facing eviction as she could no longer afford her rent. A kind neighbour informed the Rental Disputes Settlement Centre, who immediately intervened on behalf of the old lady. The ‘helping hand’ committee agreed to pay the outstanding Dh48,000 and, after talking with her landlord, received a promise he would allow her to stay and not attempt to evict her in the future.

According to a worker who’d helped deal with the case, the old lady had worked in the city as a nurse prior to her retirement, and receives no financial assistance from her son as he can’t support her as well as himself on his wage of just Dh6,000. Her daughter is studying medicine and can’t afford to help as a result.

Meanwhile in Kuwait, a female attorney has come out in support of the emirate’s diverse society, saying the emirate is blessed to have such a wide selection of different nationalities working together for its benefit. This diversity, she says, also results in many children having mixed-race parents, thus making it easier to embrace diverse cultures and learn from them. She added she’s sad Kuwaiti laws sometimes don’t embrace the region’s differences and diversity, and wonders whether the laws reflect Kuwaiti society or affect it. She believes that, whatever some Emiratis say about foreigners, they are an integral part of Kuwait society, adding that society is dependent on the expats who form an integral part of the population.
