For travellers to Lisbon, a new boutique hotel has opened offering a different kind of hospitality from most city centre accommodation.

Villa Dorothéa lies in the Portuguese capital’s Lapa district, occupying a carefully restored 19th-century hamlet. It is spread across five interconnected houses set between cobbled pathways, quiet courtyards, and terraces scented with jasmine and bougainvillaea.
The hotel has no formal lobby. Instead, guests follow footpaths paved with traditional Portuguese stonework, passing ceramic tributes to the area’s fishing heritage and historic tiled plaques that connect the house, hotel, and surrounding city.
A micro-neighbourhood in busy Lisbon
Villa Dorothéa is designed as a private micro-neighbourhood within Lapa, threaded through with passageways that give it the feel of a village.
The houses date back to 1878 and were originally home to the families of the city’s fishermen.
The interiors, by LACASTA Interior Design Studio and Carla Kottmann, combine architectural details with contemporary furnishings that sit alongside collected objects, books and decorative pieces to create the familiarity and character of a private residence.
At the heart of the property is The Secret, a 25-seat gastrobar extending between a secluded courtyard and a rooftop overlooking the city. It is open to both guests and external diners and draws inspiration from the city’s culture of long evenings, shared plates and conversation.
It also serves signature cocktails inspired by Luís de Camões’ Os Lusíadas, a 16th-century epic poem about maritime exploration.
As for breakfast, there’s specialty coffee from nearby award-winning roastery Filtrô and bread delivered fresh each morning by local artisan bakery Pão do Pastor.
Enjoy Lisbon’s slower side
Villa Dorothéa encourages guests to take life slowly. The hotel is home to a library curated in partnership with the Lisbon bookshop Salted Books.
Launching later this summer, Villa Suppers will bring guests and Lisbon locals together around long communal tables, drawing inspiration from the tradition of Portuguese family lunches.
Its ongoing social calendar will also include a series of events throughout the year such as sunset DJ sessions on the roof terrace, Champagne rituals and wine tastings with local producers.
As for wellness, each room has its own yoga mat and accessories, while group classes are available in partnership with LX Portal Yoga Studio across the street. In-room Swedish massages by wellness pioneer Cristina Lobo can also be arranged on request.
The property has introduced a dedicated pillow menu, with a choice of a cooling gel pillow, an ergonomic memory foam pillow, and an aromatherapy memory foam pillow infused with CBD, lavender, essential oils and chamomile.
Why you should stay in the Lapa neighbourhood
Lapa is one of Lisbon’s most distinguished residential neighbourhoods, known for its graceful architecture and colourful streets.
From the 16th century onwards, the area became known for the palaces and estates of noble families and prosperous merchants, later attracting the Portuguese aristocracy and bourgeoisie.
The arrival of embassies and diplomatic residences in the early 20th century further shaped the discreet, cosmopolitan character that Lapa retains today.
The neighbourhood houses some of the city’s most talked-about restaurants – including Skizzo, Da Noi and Familjen – alongside a host of independent design shops, artists’ studios and artisanal coffee spots.
