Expats in Spain are now being warned severe weather events due to global warming will become the norm.

Floods, severe droughts, heatwaves and mega-storms are set to become the norm in Spain due to the looming climate crisis. This decade is due to go down as the hottest on record, with Spain’s popular expats' and visitor regions hard hit by soaring temperatures, gota fria storms and deadly floods. Worse still, desertification is spreading across Southern Spain, threatening agriculture and creeping closer to many favourite expat destinations.

Worst at risk are Almeria, Malaga and Granada provinces, with Valencia and Murcia also threatened by semi-desert conditions. According to climate change experts including the World Meteorological Organisation, temperatures are now far too close for comfort to the 1.5 degree rise believed to be able to bring on extreme weather events with the power to destroy vital ecosystems.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg is to take part in a key Madrid climate summit this Friday and will join with a massive demonstration urging action before it’s too late. This year is expected to be the third hottest ever recorded, and September’s Arctic sea ice minimum was the third smallest ever. For British expats living in the threatened regions, there’s quite simply nothing which can be done to ensure extreme weather events won’t threaten their homes and lifestyles or even their lives. This year’s devastating floods are now being seen as a warning about what’s to come without drastic action being taken in order to save humanity as well as all other species and possibly the planet itself.
