Are co-living spaces the answer for younger expat professionals in

Dubai

?

As the numbers of young, entrepreneurial expats in Dubai continue to increase, co-living spaces are springing up amongst the city’s clusters of townhouses and high rise apartment blocks. The city’s high cost of living and soaring rental charges have made shared space the only option for many new arrivals, with the trend now becoming increasingly popular. On offer are small private studio apartments linked to communal lounges for relaxation, creating an affordable solution for today’s young expat professionals.

Over a third of Dubai’s expat population are between the ages of 22 and 36 years, with the majority looking to rent quality accommodation close by workplaces as well as leisure facilities. Several developers now taking advantage of the trend are including co-living spaces, perfect for young entrepreneurs and digital nomads. Several new projects are now at the construction stage, in the hopes that even more young professionals will arrive and either buy into the concept or at least rent on a longer term basis.

The trend began in Singapore, becoming popular with incoming young expats very quickly as a response to soaring rentals and house prices. Another bonus for co-living apartments in Dubai is that rents may be able to be paid monthly rather than quarterly or annually in advance as is the norm. At present, Dubai has over 50 co-working and living spaces, popular with tech professionals and other younger expat groups as well as with a number of local businesses and established entrepreneurs. Supporter of the system are convinced it’s the way forward as it allows incoming new talent an affordable base in which to grow.
