Doha’s brand new Metro Red Line South opened yesterday to the sound of cheering and clapping from crowds of expats and locals awaiting their first ride.

Qatar’s capital is becoming clogged with road traffic, especially during rush hours, with the new metro service more than welcome as it saves time and the hassle of finding parking spaces in the central area. To celebrate the new service, Mowasalat had announced the provision of feeder buses for commuters along with special discount deals for passengers using their Karwa taxi routes.

City residents are more than thrilled about the new service, with one telling reporters he’d been excited by his first Metro journey as it means a far more convenient trip to his office. He’s hoping there will be adequate parking spaces available around the new Metro station as he’d be more than happy to use the train every day. Another said he’d been anticipating the opening of the new line as it’s sure to make his journey to work at Bankstreet far easier.

On board the first train, expats and locals alike were sending selfies and videos to their families and friends, showing the comfortable seating and the attractive design of the train itself, and everyone was happy about the free feeder buses. Karwa taxis are also offering a promotional fare deal of just QRS8 for commuters who use the new Metro train. The Red Line South Metro service starts from Al Qassar and runs to Al Wakra, with the initial route now open comprising 13 stations out of a final total of 18.
