Alicante Now Cheapest Rental Destination For Would-be British Expats

Alicante is now a favourite for British retirees due to its cheap rentals.

As the value of sterling staggers due to Brexit uncertainty, finding a cheap rental apartment in Spain is a priority for many British expat retirees. A recent survey by a

local appraisal company could well help with decision-making, as it’s identified the five Spanish retirement destinations with the cheapest rentals. Alicante is the best known, already popular with British expats, and Huelva, Elche, Almeria and Castellon de la Plana are also mentioned as bargain property hubs. Unsurprisingly, Barcelona is the most expensive as regards rentals, with homes in the priciest area renting out for as much as €5,400 monthly.

Elsewhere in Spain, one British expat has found the perfect answer to keeping all his rights post-Brexit, simply by swapping his UK passport for the Romanian version. Nenei Newman has been resident in Spain for 15 years and is determined not to give up his right to free movement as he loves travelling in Europe. His mother is Romanian, thus entitling him to a Romanian passport and giving him the freedom to roam wherever he pleases. He was spurred to take the decision by his increasing amazement at the mess the UK government were making of Brexit, saying it’s his best if not his only option.

British expats living on the Costa del Sol aren’t giving up on their determination to help those with dementia and Alzheimer’s, and have just jazzed up their charity shop in Manilva. The group has enlarged and refitted their original store and gave it a grand opening aimed at putting it firmly on the local map. President of the charity Jacquei Claxton-Smith told local reporters she’s determined to raise even more awareness of the disease as well a helping those affected to live more comfortable lives. She’s planning to cram even more desirables into the shop as well as encouraging the expat community to visit on a regular basis.
