The Aperol Spritz Index: European Cities To Visit For An Affordable Aperitivo

Published on Updated

Summer means different things for everyone, but for me, it means the stickiness of sunscreen. The scent of the ocean. The feel of sand between my toes.

As for the taste of summer, it has to be a spritz.

While my favourite summertime tipple is actually a Hugo, Aperol Spritz is the cocktail most people find themselves ordering once the mercury starts to rise.

If you’re a big fan of Italy's famous aperitivo, but don’t love the price tag some bars attach to it, you’re definitely going to want to read the Aperol Spritz index.

Released annually by eurochange, the index ranks cities across Europe based on the average price of the orange alcoholic beverage.

Unsurprisingly, the home nation of the beloved drink came out on top as you can grab a glass in Naples for just €2.

Second place also went to Italy, but the Sicilian city of Palermo is nowhere near as affordable as Naples, with average prices doubling to €4.

Two beachside cities in Bulgaria claimed third and fourth place, with average costs in Varna coming in at €4.75, and in Burgas at €4.92.

The top five was rounded out by Marmaris in Türkiye, where a glass will set you back TL333 (€6.32).

As for the most expensive cities, the list is bookended by another Italian city. In Milan, the cocktail will set you back an average of a whopping €16.66.

Drinkers in the capital Rome don’t fare much better, as prices there hover around €14.

Average prices were calculated by looking at the menus for the top three search results for “the best Aperol Spritz in (insert destination)”.
