A new safari retreat in South Africa’s Greater Kruger region has just opened after a five-year rehabilitation and rewilding project at a former hunting reserve.

Sandringham Private Game Reserve, which borders the Timbavati and Thornybush game reserves, is made up of two luxury safari camps – N’weti, so named for the silhouette of the Drakensberg Mountains, and Shisaka – which have six suites each.

The latter has two private villas, and you can also book the exclusive-use four-bedroom Sandringham House for a family escape.

Sabi Sabi Collection, which is behind the new opening, aims to offer an “intimate safari experience shaped by conservation, community engagement and luxury”.

Alongside restoring natural habitats and supporting wildlife recovery in the reserve, the brand partnered with the Tracker Training Academy to support young people from neighbouring communities with careers as professional wildlife trackers.

“What inspired us most was the opportunity to restore and protect an extraordinary landscape while creating a safari experience that delivers lasting value for wildlife, local communities and future generations of travellers,” Jacques Smit, marketing director at Sabi Sabi Collection, said.

“Watching the land recover and wildlife return has been one of the most rewarding journeys in our history.”

Each suite comes with its own private infinity pool, indoor-outdoor bathrooms, and nest-like relaxation spaces inspired by Tsonga heritage from which you have an excellent vantage point over the Timbavati River.

The central lodge features a spa and gym, an education centre for younger guests, and boma dining complete with a wine tower showcasing South African estates.

You can reach the near 5,000 hectare reserve by flying into the private airstrip.

Game drives and walking safaris are included in your stay, and with four rivers passing through the reserve, this is a dreamy spot for birders.
