The temporary closure of UK/EU post Brexit negotiations due to the pandemic has caused concern for British expats in southern Spain.
Post-Brexit talks between Britain and the EU have just been suspended until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving UK expats living in Spain bitterly disappointed. All across the popular retirement destination, older British expats have been awaiting desperately needed clarification of their ultimate positions as Spanish residents, with yet another delay causing a combination of anger, resentment and resignation.
As the bad news broke, so did new coronavirus statistics stating Spain is now considered to be a high-risk zone for infection, second only to Italy in Europe and overtaking both Germany and France. Regional governments across the favourite British expat destination are stepping up all measures to control the virus, including day centre, school and university closures as well as the suspension until further notice of all group activities. A sum totalling 2,800 million euros has been injected into the economy, and guarantees are now in place as regards the provision of protective supplies including masks.
All of Spain’s expatriate communities are being urged to take on board all measures recommended by the health authority in order to prevent the further spread of the deadly pandemic. Given that the majority of British expats in the country are retirees, following the advice given is even more important, especially for those who suspect they may have been in accidental contact with an infected person. It’s particularly important to follow the two-week self-quarantine requirement for those who’ve recently returned from overseas as well as for those showing flu, cold or respiratory symptoms.
