It’s not just UK expats in Europe who fear the effects of Brexit, as expatriates living and working in the UK are concerned about the country’s domestic politics.

As the Brexit conundrum drags on and on, new research has revealed some 14 per cent of expatriates living and working in the UK would be prepared to return to their home countries solely for political reasons. Around one third of Britain’s expat community expressed serious concerns over the state of Britain’s domestic policies and their potential effect on expatriate lives. This percentage is higher than UK- based expats’ concerns about the risk of terrorism attacks in the UK.

Comparing foreign expats’ take on their security and stability in the UK with other popular expat destinations tells its own story, with those who’d consider leaving France at 12 per cent, those worried about domestic policies in Hong Kong totalling 6 per cent, those in the UAE at 5 per cent and those in Canada at 3 per cent. Commentators on the result consider it justifiable due to the seemingly never ending Brexit chaos and the worrying rise in prejudice against foreigners in the UK.

In spite of EU member state governmental reassurances aimed at UK expats living in Europe as well as the British government’s semi-favourable stance on EU migrants, speculation over the final Brexit result is still causing fear and controversy in the UK and many popular British expat hubs in EU member states. The latest extension of Article 50 allowed by the EU last night isn’t expected to damp down expat fears, wherever they’re from or wherever they’re presently located.
