Garmin Connect Outage Leaves Folks Unable To Share Their Fitness Virtue Signaling

Fitness app Garmin Connect got knocked down but got up again, after an unexplained outage that left fitness extroverts flummoxed.

There's no need to panic: Garmin's watches appear to be still recording data but the Connect platform used to correlate fitness data, and share it with others such as Strava, took a dive early on Wednesday morning. Garmin isn't responding to questions about what went wrong as yet, or if any personal data has been lost.

The problems started at around 0200 PT (1000 UTC) and affected the app, not the corporate website. Still, people keen to share their fitness goals were frustrated.

"No way: I’ve just finished a ten-mile run and Garmin is having an outage, OMFG," was a typical comment from users.

It appears that sailors relying on Garmin - who were their original target market back in the 1990s when the biz started up - are unaffected. That's good news for those busy navigating shipping lanes.

Garmin isn't saying what caused the outage, and it isn't the first time the Swiss-based exercise biz has had problems. In 2020, the manufacturer was tripped up by a suspected ransomware attack that left the servers down for five days while it responded to the SNAFU.

According to the status page today, everything's fine for the moment, so it's time to start telling everyone how far you ran today again.

We'll update as more information comes in. ®
