Donald Trump's return to the White House changed the world overnight. Predictability and reliability, the cornerstones of economic stability for companies and public institutions, are now endangered. Geopolitical uncertainty has become a tangible risk.
Several White House policies have particularly affected Europe's digital landscape, leading to the discussion of new tariffs on US digital products. US authorities are also enforcing the US CLOUD Act and FISA Section 702 more aggressively, granting broad access to globally stored data.
The President has also used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a U.S. federal statute that grants him broad authority to use economic measures in response to declared national emergencies. This has become a routine aspect of international trade policy.
For European companies, the implications are profound. Those still relying on US hyperscalers risk not only escalating costs but also the unrestrained access of third parties to sensitive data, and potentially to critical business functions. In the worst-case scenario, this could block or shut down applications, or raise their costs.
"Digital sovereignty is not a luxury, but a basic prerequisite for economic stability and competitiveness," emphasized a former Minister of Economic Affairs back in 2023, calling for a digital infrastructure that is not only located in Europe, but also subject to European law and executive influence.
A billion-euro market in flux
The public sector is investing heavily in digital transformation. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, large-scale IT tenders worth over €30 billion were issued in Germany in 2023 alone. This trend is rising. Much of this investment targets cloud infrastructure, digital platforms, and AI systems. Increasingly, European providers are reaping the benefits.
The dPhoenixSuite, developed by Dataport and operated on the IONOS Cloud, is a prime example of how modern public administration can be digitized. Six federal states already trust this open-source based, interoperable, and secure solution. The project isn't just a technological success; it's also a political signal that Europe can be digitally sovereign. The IONOS AI Model Hub, part of the Nextcloud Hub, is another flagship project in this transformation.
AI is the new gold rush in the European data economy
AI is the key technology of the next decade, and a core theme of digital sovereignty. The EU AI Act sets clear rules: AI systems must be transparent, explainable, and GDPR compliant. This effectively excludes many proprietary "black-box" models from the European market.
Meanwhile, a new European AI gold standard is emerging. The IONOS AI Model Hub provides a secure European platform for modern open-source models including Teuken-7B and Llama 3.3, trained in Europe, hosted in ISO-certified datacenters, and fully compliant with European law. With IONOS GPT, a sovereign ChatGPT alternative is also on the horizon, offering a German-engineered, GDPR-compliant option for generative AI.
The economic potential is enormous. According to PwC, AI could add over $15 trillion to global GDP by 2030. Companies that position themselves as AI-ready today will gain a strategic technological and economic advantage.
Europe responds with regulations and technology
The EU is setting clear standards. The AI Act demands explainable, trustworthy AI. The Data Act promotes interoperability and prevents lock-ins. Public procurement increasingly prioritizes providers with European datacenters and open technologies.
IONOS doesn't just meet these requirements on paper; it already implements them in practice. The entire cloud infrastructure is made in Germany, hosted in datacenters under German jurisdiction. Data transfers to third countries? Excluded. Access by foreign intelligence agencies? Not possible. IONOS operates under European law only with no exceptions.
With 17 sites in Germany and over 50 across the EU, IONOS offers more than just geographic proximity. It guarantees the highest level of legal security. Data, infrastructure, and strategic decisions remain 100% under customer control with no hidden back doors or lock-ins.
IONOS is committed to open-source standards. Proprietary, opaque solutions are deliberately avoided. The Sovereign European Cloud API SECA API, jointly developed with Aruba and Dynamo, lays the technical groundwork for an interoperable European cloud ecosystem. SECA API paves the way for EuroStack, Europe's first genuine superscaler.
Also leading in security, IONOS datacenters are ISO 27001, BSI C5, and BSI IT-Grundschutz certified. This means the highest levels of resilience, data protection, and compliance, consistently verifiable and securely anchored in Europe.
Customers also benefit from a transparent pricing model that is up to 50% cheaper than US hyperscalers. There are no hidden costs, complex licensing schemes, or sudden price increases. IONOS offers fair conditions, real control, and sovereign technology.
Now is the time to act
The digital infrastructure you choose today will determine your ability to act tomorrow. Organizations that fail to secure their digital foundations now risk missing out on innovation funding, strategic partnerships, and public tenders.
Those who act now are laying a stable foundation for resilience, growth, and technological leadership. How can you make your cloud strategy sovereign, secure, and future-proof? Find out directly from the IONOS cloud experts in our webinar.
