The seven acres for sale in the town comes complete with a mini golf course, an ice cream parlour called The Crematory, a wedding chapel and plenty of tongue-in-cheek infernal charm.

After decades welcoming visitors to the “Gateway to Hell”, its 80-year-old owner has decided it’s finally time to get out of Hell for good. Owner John Colone is selling up in order to retire, having been running the popular tourist destination since 1998.

Among the quirky, hell-themed businesses, the wedding chapel is particularly popular. On Hell’s website, a tongue-in-cheek description reads: “A marriage that starts in Hell has no place to go but up!"

The unusually-named town has been functional since 1838, and its name was officially adopted three years later.

When Hell freezes over

In the winter, Hell can experience sub-zero temperatures, meaning it literally freezes over.

Nevertheless, the town is also home to the popular Hell Saloon, a restaurant which also boasts a music venue.

According to Hell’s real estate listing, the property is profitable, having made $327,000 (€282,000) in gross income in 2024.

Found 20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, Michigan’s fifth largest city, Hell has long been a favourite destination for tourists looking for somewhere a little different.

On Michigan’s state tourist website, its many charms are extolled.

"Hell is a quirky, must-visit destination known for its devilish humour and playful attractions," it reads.

"Whether you're here for laughs, photo ops, or the novelty of saying, 'You've been to Hell and back,’ this offbeat town offers a memorable and entertaining experience."
