Expats in Spain are concerned over the censorship of an online coronavirus conspiracy video.
A recently-posted video seen on Vimeo, YouTube and Facebook claims to have been a trailer for a documentary claiming not only the numbers of coronavirus deaths have been falsified but also that the virus was man-made. The video, entitled Plandemic, has since been removed by all three popular websites, but expats in Spain are disturbed by what they’re seeing as censorship of a subject which needs to be discussed.
Claims are being made that the removal of the admittedly provocative video breaches the fine line between censorship of content which doesn’t suit a state and censorship for the public good. When asked to explain the removal, several different reasons were given by the internet giants, ranging from copyright issues through ‘medically unsubstantiated diagnostic advice’ to the catch-all comment ‘unverified claims’.
The video itself encouraged disagreement with government rules on the lockdown by quoting claims which could be counterproductive to slowing the spread of the virus. None seemed to be sensibly based, but censoring could have the unintended result of making them more believable. Expats living through the seemingly unending lockdowns, restrictions of movement and blocking of all normal communications could be forgiven for hitting out at censorship which denies them the chance of making their own minds up on an informed basis.
