Travelodge has published an update on planned expansion for this year and 2023, which it says represents an investment of approximately £330 million by third party investors.

The group is scheduled to open six properties in the UK in 2022, as well as a 397-room flagship Dublin city centre hotel under its franchisee TIFCO.

Three of the UK properties – in London’s Docklands, Wimbledon and Hexham – will feature Travelodge’s recently-unveiled “budget-luxe” design revamp, while hotels are also set to open this year in Lewisham, Peckham and Braintree.

Further ahead the group expects to open hotels in Beckenham, Bermondsey, Colchester and Ipswich in 2023, and a further six properties are under development in Harwich, Norwich, Rotherham, Salisbury, Waltham Cross and London’s Loughton/Debden.

Six of the seven hotels opening this year will feature the group’s upgraded Bar Café concept. The tables below detail the forthcoming Travelodge properties and whether they will offer a Bar Café and /or the brand’s Superrooms – over half of Travelodge hotels currently being built will offer what the group describes as it “premium economy room-type”.

Commenting on the news Steve Bennett, Travelodge chief property and development officer, said:

“2022 marks an important milestone in the evolution of Travelodge, as we launch our new premium look and feel budget-luxe Travelodge design hotels and expand our estate with new hotels and in-house restaurants .

“We are seeking to continue this expansion with plans for more than 75 new Travelodge hotels throughout the UK over the next five years, which will create around 2,000 new jobs.”

“As we look to the future, the long-term prospects for low-cost hotels remain strong. Britain has become a nation of value conscious travellers, with more of us choosing to stay in budget hotels than any other hotel type, supporting our plans to expand our hotel network.

“It is also an interesting time for the property sector; as the Covid pandemic has accelerated major change and opened opportunities for us to take Travelodge to new locations.

“We are very excited by the next phase of our expansion plan, which will see us deliver more choices in more places than ever before.”
