IHG has announced plans for a return to Rome for its Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts brand.

Intercontinental last had a presence in the Italian capital in 2016 with the Intercontinental De La Ville Roma, which is now a Rocco Forte property.

The Intercontinental Rome is set to open in 2022, and will feature 160 rooms and suites, a restaurant, bar and spa facilities.

It will be housed within an existing 19th century palazzo building on Via Veneto in the Ludovisi area of the city, close to the Villa Borghese gardens.

Interestingly in 2017 Marriott announced plans for a 159-room W Hotels property, also housed in a 19th century building on Via Veneto. This development no longer seems to appear on the W website as a forthcoming hotel. It’s not clear whether it is in fact the same property – Business Traveller has reached out to both IHG and Marriott to clarify this.

Commenting on the news Willemijn Geels, vice president of development, Europe, IHG, said:

“The signing of an Intercontinental in Rome represents an important moment in the growth of our luxury portfolio and brand presence across Europe. In these challenging and unprecedented times, this signing shows the continued trust our Owners and partners place in IHG and our brands.

“We are delighted to partner with Oaktree Capital and Westmont Hospitality Group and look forward to offering InterContinental guests a rich and unforgettable experience in the Eternal City.”

Earlier this year IHG also announced plans for a Rome property under its recently acquired Six Senses brand.
