Brussels Airlines must be one of the very last European carriers to adopt hand baggage only (HBO) fares.

Its “Light” fares are now being sold on routes linking Brussels with destinations in North America.

Prices are slightly cheaper provided travellers do not have checked luggage. HBO fares are aimed at cost-conscious passengers and, in particular, millennials.

Brussels Airlines operates transatlantic to New York JFK, Washington DC and Toronto.

Says Dirk Janzen, VP pricing and revenue management, “The new economy light fare is a further development of our efforts to offer individualised solutions to cater to the needs of our different types of guests.”

As previously reported other Lufthansa Group carriers also sell HBO tariffs on transatlantic routes.

Where will the next development be seen?

Possibly it could be the offer of HBO fares by the Gulf airlines. As we reported earlier this month Emirates is investigating whether or not to offer HBO fares as part of a new economy class product.
