American Airlines has announced that flight cancellations tied to the grounding of its fleet of Boeing B737 Max aircraft will continue until at least June 5, Fox Business News reports.
The grounding of the airline’s 24 B737 Max jets after recent crashes involving Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines aircraft, has resulted in about 90 AA flights per day being cancelled, and airline officials said there is no immediate solution to the problem in sight.
“By proactively canceling these flights, we are able to provide better service to our customers with availability and rebooking options,” the airline said in a statement.
In response to two recent fatal crashes of B737 Max passenger jets, Boeing is working to correct problems with the jet’s MCAS system, which appears to have erroneously forced the nose of the plane down in both incidents. Boeing also has temporarily halted production of the aircraft.
“We are coordinating closely with our customers as we work through plans to mitigate the impact of this adjustment,” an airline spokesperson said.
“We will also work directly with our suppliers on their production plans to minimize operational disruption and financial impact of the production rate change.”
