As the University of Leicester enters its second century, collaboration is vital to its success in changing the world for the better.

From ground-breaking COVID-19 research with the NHS to air quality monitoring innovation with EarthSense to nurturing Leicester-based global success story, MicroFresh, the university is an impactful partner in local, regional, national and international success.

Professor Nishan Canagarajah, president and vice-chancellor said: “We have a real opportunity to progress with partnerships that are truly dynamic and mutually beneficial. By working together, we can harness the transformative power of education to effect positive change in society. Our community of staff, students, alumni and supporters are Citizens of Change.”

This collaborative spirit is why the University of Leicester is proud to be a headline and category sponsor of the Leicestershire Live Business Awards 2022.

Besides the University of Leicester’s importance to the national economy in supporting one in every 23 jobs in Leicester and a further 7,000 across the county, the university plays a central role in bringing together businesses and students. Whilst businesses gain access to student expertise through Year in Industry and internship schemes, businesses leaders can provide engaging placements, incorporate real-world challenges in to the curriculum and showcase their expertise as guest speakers.

Businesses can also access support to drive their innovation and development. One example is the Leicester Innovation Hub which provides easy access to research and development, innovation expertise, facilities and technologies. The Innovation Hub delivers innovation projects, helps businesses access funding, sustainability support and provides students and graduates with start-up and scale-up opportunities.

Leicester Innovation Hub manager, Rajinder Bhuhi explained: “Supporting innovation and offering opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs and innovating businesses is helping to build a strong ecosystem within our region, which has been supported and funded through the University of Leicester and European Regional Development Fund. We are proud to serve as an engine for innovation and enterprise in our region.”

Space Park Leicester is a hub of innovation for the region

Similarly, building on decades of experience in space research, the recently launched, Space Park Leicester, has collaboration at its core. Space Park brings together industry, academics and students to drive innovation in the space and space-enabled sectors bringing millions to the regional economy.

Professor Richard Ambrosi, executive director of Space Park Leicester said: “We undertake world-leading research, science and offer a wide-range of skills and educational development opportunities.”

The recently announced Universities Partnership agreement demonstrates a further commitment to collaboration. Bringing the University of Leicester together with local authorities, Loughborough University and De Montfort University, the partnership aims to drive economic development and overcome social challenges.

Sir Peter Soulsby, Leicester City mayor said: “We look forward to working even more closely with all three universities and the other local councils involved to do all we can to address poverty and inequality in our communities, and to increase prosperity for the city and wider economic area.”

The University of Leicester School of Business also plays a substantial role in supporting local and regional businesses. More than 150 SMEs business leaders have benefited from the 12-week Help to Grow: Management course over the past year. The school has also developed a new strategic partnership with the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and has established collaborations with the Harborough Innovation Centre, the Rotary Club, NBV and Embark CSR.
